Commemoration Action Statement: Second Anniversary of the Revolutionary Uprising Woman, Life, Freedom

The Iranian people’s revolutionary movement for freedom and equality has experienced many ups and downs over the past 45 years. The emergence of widespread and nationwide protests by hundreds of thousands of outraged and fed-up people in Iran in September 2022, which ultimately led to the revolutionary uprising of Woman, Life, Freedom, marks one of the brightest chapters in the history of the Iranian people’s struggles. This uprising, sparked by the brutal and criminal state-sanctioned murder of Mahsa (Jina) Amini by the murderous forces of the Islamic Republic’s morality police, ignited like a spark, unleashing the volcano of rage from women, youth, and other protesting masses against the regime.

This movement embodied the people’s anger and hatred toward the Islamic Republic regime and was a continuation of the revolutionary uprisings of December 2017 and November 2019. It drew its potential from the accumulation of legitimate human demands of the millions of protesting people, especially young women and men, who saw no future for themselves under the current reactionary governance. As a result, only a few days after the protests began, tens of thousands of people in more than 150 cities across Iran challenged the capitalist Islamic Republic regime, garnering global attention and admiration for their immense courage, sacrifice, and awareness.

The 2022 uprising, rightfully led by brave and dedicated women, saw them at the forefront for several months, courageously and selflessly confronting one of the bloodiest regimes in human history. During this period, hundreds lost their lives, thousands were injured, and many more were imprisoned, tortured, or executed in the Islamic Republic’s unjust courts. The significant achievements of this movement not only severely shook the ideological foundations and Islamic brutality of the regime but also left profound and irreversible impacts on society. Nevertheless, this massive and dynamic uprising fell short of achieving the revolutionary overthrow of the Islamic regime and consigning it to the dustbin of history. This failure was not only due to the regime’s brutal and savage repression but also because the movement was unable to garner the solidarity and support of the working class and other protesting and revolutionary masses.

On the second anniversary of the revolutionary uprising of Woman, Life, Freedom, Iran is on the brink of significant events. The early signs of these changes can be seen in the grand protests and strikes by nurses across the country, oil workers, women, youth, political prisoners, and other masses who are fed up with the regime’s oppression and repression. These days also mark the anniversary of the 1988 massacre of political prisoners, when the regime’s executioners, over just a few weeks, executed thousands of political prisoners. This brutal act aimed to intimidate society after drinking the chalice of poison following the end of the eight-year war with Iraq.

We honour the memory of all those who lost their lives in the Iranian revolutionary uprising and stood with the grieving families and the families of political prisoners. We pledge to fight for the release of all political prisoners, seek justice for the perpetrators and instigators of these murders, and work towards the dismantling of the entire capitalist Islamic Republic regime.

“Free All Political Prisoners and Imprisoned Workers!”

“Down with the Islamic Republic Regime!”

“Long Live Freedom and Equality!”
